Mellowguy,
Responsibility is what the Forest Service expects. People who camp at the Spring, make camp fires during High Danger season and who generally endanger the Springs are far more of a problem than the unaccompanied guys I know. But its how we treat the people and the place which makes a difference. It's OK to do many things around the Springs but not in many other contexts. I know many guys who will hike down to the Springs with no clothing at all with them or in their pack. (The fact that some of them don't bring much survival gear with them is a problem, they are depending on others to rescue them. The realization that we are in a Wilderness helps one understand that we must be self-sufficient and be able to self recover from unexpected changes in the environment.) These individuals have no way of adapting to the unexpected visitors at the Springs. If someone becomes lost the Sheriff will fly their helicopters for hours above Deep Creek for miles up and down stream. Not all of these officers have the same understanding as the Forestry Service about what is acceptable clothing in this area. We are all correct about what we know about the area but are you willing to defend that with all the costs associated with it in court? Being responsible means doing what is the best for all who come to discover the Springs. Moon Hiking Guide to California says this area is a '9.' It is worth arriving at this destination. Let's help make it so in the future. No fires. No glass. Keep the frogs propagating. And help the regular (textiled visitor) happy and in agreement that we should all have access to this area. If you try to keep it CO only you miss the point of what Optional means.
