Jobe, If I get out there, I'll see if I can do anything to help with the pool. As for the cows, I wasn't really complaining, just making an observation. I actually make my living in the environmental sciences, and I would doubt there would be a realistic environmental benefit to grazing the cows around the creek basin. Although they have stepped into the buffalo's hoofprints to some extenby Rivernude - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Does anyone know the latest information about the route to Big Caliente? From my understanding, there was recently a road closure that affected access. Hiking in wouldn't be a problem, just not sure of the best way to get there from the Oxnard/Port Hueneme area, especially if road closures are involved. Any help would be appreciated! I'll agree with you both. I'm all for hunting, but let's do it on fair terms. Shooting a treed critter just doesn't seem too sporting to me. Dog-chased deer hunting used to be popular in Arkansas, but it's fallen from grace, thankfully, over the last few decades. Bear hunting there is done without the aid of dogs, on a very limited basis. As LaughingBear indicated, though, well-intentioned (by Rivernude - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Wow! I wonder who was watching the state of Oregon? Sounds like they were all in California! LOL What's with the cows? Are they allowed to graze in the area, or just running loose? It doesn't seem that large, hoofed herbivores would be very beneficial to that ecosystem. I was thinking about heading out to DCHS this weekend, but the weather forecast looks a little cool for my taste. Sby Rivernude - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Well, you folks know your own government agencies and groups way better than I do (I'm from Arkansas), but I would suggest that Californians that enjoy clothing-optional activities on public land should get organized and make a stand in some way or another. From the outside, looking in, I see anti-nudity advocates chipping away merrily at the opportunities you have in California. Arkansas has aby Rivernude - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Wizard, I'll second that! Really enjoyed the pics! Looks like you had the place pretty well to yourself, except for that nudist dog! Jimby Rivernude - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I hope that all of you have a great weekend! Congratulations on the 34th anniversary! Be sure to take your camera...the leaves of the riparian zone vegetation are turning very nicely! Tom, you might want to make that a couple BOXES of wine...glass is not allowed. In fact, it's quite frowned on, especially down at the springs, but also at Bowen Ranch. On the Bowen Ranch map/flier that you gby Rivernude - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
John, I think Rick just meant that you might want to camp a distance from the Bowen Ranch house, rather than on NF land. When you get there, you'll see that the road leads southward across the property from the entrance and house, with campsites scattered along the way. Like Paul said, nudity on the ranch seems to be no problem at all. As for fires, the screen might be a good idea if you'reby Rivernude - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Interesting article. It makes a lot of sense, although I can't speak from experience. Wolves have been gone from Arkansas so long, the coyotes are well established. I see coyotes on a regular basis, but in 40 years of time spent outdoors in Arkansas, I've never seen a wild wolf, and only two bears. History's full of human-induced wildlife changes that didn't work out quite as man had planned.by Rivernude - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Sam, Went to DCHS this afternoon. Hiked up to the "narrows", where the spur trail crosses the creek to connect with the PCT. On my way back, I hiked (and "mountain-goated" ) along the creek itself. Passed through the site where the trail repair crew was camped, and visited with them for a bit. There is an arrangement to allow them to camp there while they're working. Sam, I'm planning to go out there tomorrow...if the bags are still there, I'll haul them out, no worries! You've already done the work of bagging it, the least I can do is hike it out. Besides, I've "meant to" get that old chair several times, and talked myself out of it each time. Still puzzles me why someone would drag something like that down there, then not take it back when tby Rivernude - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California

Hi Rick, Not being from around here, I don't know what these totals mean, in terms of actual effects. How will the rain affect DCHS over the coming weekend (17-18 October). Most would be insignificant rainfalls if they were back in Arkansas, but I know that's not the case out here. Is it time to plan a weekend trip elsewhere? Thanks! 25:48?? Enjoy it! I'll see you later, when I get there! I had planned to go out there last weekend, now I'm kind of glad I skipped it. Don't mean to sound anti-social...I'm not...but that sounds like a few more folks than I'd enjoy being around in a small area. Glad they had their fun, though. I'm usually concerned that the "easy hike" in a helicopter will turn out more like aby Rivernude - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I was at DCHS one weekend ago (26/27 September), and the creek crossing wasn't bad, at all. I'm about 6 feet tall, and the water was just above my knees. When you leave the beach, stay to your right a bit, and aim for the downstream edge of the biggest rock formation, and it's pretty shallow. You'll see a ring of small rocks that makes a warm pool...aim for that. Even straight across, althougby Rivernude - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Hi all, I'm new to the SoCal area, just here for a few months. I'm from Arkansas, but have been lucky enough to spend the last two weekends (Labor day weekend and the one before) in the DCHS area. What a beautiful place! I hope to return many times while I'm out this way. I'm not sure if I met any of those on this forum, but everyone I did meet were nice folks. If we did meet, I'm the guyby Rivernude - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
