My son and I fly fished the upper reaches of Deep Creek on 5/21 and, as there are sometimes queries here about the fishing, our experience might be useful to some others. We hiked in about 30 minutes along the PCT from Splinters Cabin after arriving at the trail head at about 12:15. I hadn't been fishing there for at least 5 years and I wasn't hopeful of much success given the variable wateby Murray - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Jobe, nice to see you at the Springs yesterday. It was a fairly large, but very mellow crowd. One large group of college students in a recreation club or something like that. I am in for this. I have been wanting to know about cleaning up, other than picking up trash, for a while now. I will be coming from Los Angeles, via 210 and Bradford Ridge trail. I can bring others with me - up to 6 others depending on which car I bring - or I can hitch a ride with someone else who is interested in driving. What time? What tools, if any, should I bring?by Murray - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Went down to DCHS on Saturday, via Bradford Ridge Trail. One other car already at Bradford Ridge trail head at 6:45am. I got down to the springs just before 8am. The water in Deep Creek is very low, and quite warm. The hot pools were in pretty good condition, especially the Anniversary Pool - despite the low water level in the creek, this pool was crystal clear and pretty clean. Coming from LA, I much prefer this route to the Bowen Ranch route for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that it is much prettier than going via Bowen Ranch and is therefore more relaxing. It takes about 1 hour 45 minutes from Hollywood, early in the morning, to get to the trailhead. The route I usually take is 210 to 18 and then on to 189 towards Blue Jay. The drive on Highway 173 from Lake Arrowhead to Bradford Ridge Trailhead at Kinely Creek bridge is fine. It is paved all the way to the Bridge. Don't come the other way, from the direction of the Deep Creek spillway. It is unpaved and not suitable for anything except high clearance vehicles. The best way to get there is not to take 173 all the way around Lake Arrowhead, but to go from 189 toby Murray - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I went to DCHS for the first time on Labor Day 2008, so my experience is very recent. After experimenting a little bit with days, times, entry points, times of the year, here is what works best for me, to achieve the aim of a relaxing, trouble free visit to DCHS with less of a crowd: Weekdays are generally better than weekends, early mornings or very late afternoon/evenings are best in the summby Murray - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Yes, that was probably me. I was exploring upstream from DCHS.by Murray - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Dear Cross: I noticed two nude hikers coming in just as we leaving. Perhaps you were one of them? Was it you who had the piece of white paper in hand? (Directions perhaps?). I was on the rocks across from the Arizona pool - the one closest to the creek on the upstream end. Hiking out at night in the summer is really pleasant. The air is cooler and everything is pretty quiet. Your miby Murray - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Wow. That is a generous gesture. One of the disappointing things about this mishap is that, out of 7 cars I tried to flag down, only one stopped. (And, she wouldn't do anything to help on her own. Fortunately, she went and got a male friend to come back and pick me up.) The rest sped away, worried that I was an axe murderer or something. I didn't think I would be alone in this, but it is good to have it confirmed. Thanks Bill. As I suspected, this is now going to become legend. My daughter told one of her friends and her suggestion was to write down the details and retell the story at my 70th birthday. (That is still many years off, hence the suggestion to write down the details). Everyone in our neighborhood now knows aby Murray - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I went to DCHS on Friday 6/19 and again yesterday, Monday 6/22. On Friday I went with a colleague from work. We left LA at 4am and got to Bradford Ridge Trail Head at 6am. We were at the Springs just before 7am. There was a group of 5 campers there, all asleep. We had the springs to ourselves until about 8:30am, when the campers started to stir. It was great. Got it. Thank for the clarification. I worked out after I wrote that post that my interpretation didn't make much sense! The only problem is that I don't know where either of the markers are that you mentioned - the Freedom Trail or the Bradford Spring. Is the Bradford Spring on the Bradford Ridge Trail? I was thinking I might just camp off one of the fire trails off 173.by Murray - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I am planning on being at DCHS on Friday afternoon/evening and Saturday morning. (I am going to camp upstream from the Springs - outside the no camping limit as I understand it). At least one of my three children will be with me. They will be wearing bathing suits, but I won't. (I am working on them!) If this person is a regular he should respect being reminded of appropriate "clothing optional" etiquette. Also, if he respects and appreciates the freedom we have at DCHS he should also respond to being reminded that it can easily be taken away. In a response to a similar question a month ago, whether to abandon DCHS to the textiles on weekends, I suggested that the solution is for naturists to go in numbers. It is only when we are a few that it becomes uncomfortable. Some people have said on this forum that it doesn't matter to them if they are greatly outnumbered or even the only one there. I think that is great. I wish I could stiby Murray - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I just got back from a week in Europe, where I spent most of my time in the Netherlands. While there I visited 3 different "thermen" These facilities require nudity for the use of the various saunas and pools, and they also provide extensive areas for nude sunbathing and socializing. They are fantastic places. A wide variety of different saunas and steam rooms, well thought out plunby Murray - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
May 16th may be crowded too. The group Naturists in Orange County is planning a day trip to DCHS for that day.by Murray - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
The key to DCHS being more naturist is to have more naturists go. We have seen in the past that there is some gravitation toward naturism among textiles if there are more than a few naturists there. Wizard, and a few others who post here, were there in January when this happened. Arizona pool was full of naturists. This made it acceptable for some textiles to remove their suits. I obviously got the date wrong for this trip report - 4/12/09 it should have been, but that hasn't bothered anyone, obviously. I don't know how I forgot this, but I remembered this morning. There was a very entertaining group of about 6 people dressed in "easter costume" - silk and taffeta frilly dresses in bright colors - red, pink, green. They looked fantastic. Took my family - wife and two boys down to DCHS on Sunday. We went in via Bowen Ranch. Got there about 11am. I took my 15 year old son and one of his friends to the Springs yesterday. There is a lot to report! We went in via the Bradford Ridge Trail, arriving at the trailhead at about 12:30pm. Thanks for the advice on the Grass Valley Road. I suspect that the suggestion might have been prompted by a conversation I had with Chuck on Friday down at DCHS. I tried to get to DCHS via 173 from Arrowhead, couldn't get through and ended up going all the way round to Bowen Ranch. A Prius is good for some things. It only took me 3.25 hours from home to get to the trail head at Bowen. Chuckby Murray - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I am thinking of going out to DCHS on Friday, via the Bradford Ridge Trail. Is there anyone from Los Angeles who would like to car pool? Any advice on the condition of the Bradford Ridge Trail after the recent snow? Will it be passable or should I just go via Bowen Ranch?by Murray - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
No Adventure Pass required. There is a sign on the road on 173 coming from Lake Arrowhead indicating where the Adventure Pass is no longer required and the Bradford Ridge Trail Head is beyond that sign.by Murray - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
It was nice to meet you too. I recalled from a previous post that you work nights, so I left you alone in the womb. Yes, you missed the rangers up the hill. My son and I made it down and back the Bradford Ridge Trail yesterday - 1/24/09.
