I like how at Black's they put up a "no public access" sign at the top of the glider trail to cover their butts for things such as these, as is the case with other trails as well.
The reason the city did this was because they got sued several years ago from someone who suffered a severe injury while walking down the trail. The City does not maintain the trail at all and they have stated that they do not want anyone providing improvements to the trail which ultimately could promote more trail use. However, this provision is not strictly enforced. In fact, there are several Blacks Beach regulars who do maintain the trail and construct occasional improvements. Crazy Steve put up some of the wood barriers you see on the trail. Robert and the Blacks Beach Diggers have done substantial concrete work and step design on the lower end of the trail as it reaches the beach. And some of the Blacks Beach Bares have also done some maintenance.
n my opinion, the glider port trail is perfectly safe for people who have the ability to walk up and down a hill. The bigger problem at Blacks Beach is visitors on the bluff who get too close to the cliff and slip and fall. I've witnessed several of these accidents.
There are other ways to get to Blacks Beach besides the Glider Port Trail including:
1) Walking down the paved path which starts at the junction of Blackgold Road and La Jolla Farms Road, then walk on the beach north
2) Take the goat trail at the north end of the dirt parking lot north of the glider port
3) Walk south on the beach from Torrey Pines State Park, or at high tide, take the trail down to the beach from Torrey Pines State Reserve
