Few more points: "There is firewood for the communal pits" - Only for one communal fire pit with benches around. Based on your wording one could infer that it's OK to take the wood. It's not and there is a sign by the pile. Bring your own firewood and clean up your ashes/charcoal. The park service is concerned about having the ashes blowing all over the place.

"Lizard has just enough to get out to the nearest service station" - not always. He collects what people donate. If people do not donate, he might not have. There is no fill up at the springs.
