Everything close to DCHS is high desert camping. If you want to hike in from the north, you can park and 'camp' in a small dirt parking lot below the 100 year old Bowen Ranch shack and pay Mike Castro $10/head/night. When you visited the DCHS Campground, if you didn't notice its picnic tables, pit toilet, potable water and showers, small desert shade trees, lots of room, published phone numberby SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
It was nice catching up with you as well Wizard, but not nearly as cool as finally meeting Dusty the Wonder Horse. And to try to stay on topic, a bit of advice: if you go to the springs by yourself think long and hard before riding your horse there if she doesn't have a security system installed. It's hard to believe that incident was a year ago already.by SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I am an eyewitness to this situation. I was driving up to the bowen toll booth Sunday morning when the SUV in front of me backed away from the shack. I asked Mike what the deal was and he said they had kids and that the springs was no place for kids. Later Sunday I recognized the father that had been turned back. He had looked up directions to Freedom trail and parked there. The Mom told meby SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Thanks for the link Rick, wow, what spirited debate in the comments amongst the uninformed. Everyone "knows" California gun laws, but unfortunately I can (almost) guarantee not one of them has read the statutes.by SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I clicked on the author "US Reporter" of Wizard's link because it sounds suspicious, but it looks real. In the link, there is an update to the article, from the Sheriff https://www.superstation95.com/index.php/world/author/966-usreporter --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------by SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Whoa! Read to the end. " At Deep Creek, my most surprising networking opportunity came when I was sitting in that hot spring (which was known as ‘the womb’). I met a guy there known as Hippie Dave who wore nothing but an orange sarong rolled up like a belt... I heard the wall came tumbling down Saturday. Are there any eyewitnesses here to it being dismantled? Where did the large rocks go? Hopefully not to the bottom of the Womb.by SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Does anyone have an opinion on the most representative weather website for DCHS? How about Bowen? I usually look at Apple Valley weather to approximate DCHS and Arrowhead for Bowen, but are there better ones?by SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Hi Not So, don't overthink this, you will have a great nudist experience whether you go in March or April or December or June. The comments about textiles on the weekend are reflective of the visitors that come then, and not of any unwritten rule. Many times they are with a group of coworkers/classmates/relatives who they don't want to get naked around. No one will care about your lack of attiby SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
On the winter solstice I *just happened* to have my big sledge with me at the springs. The new wall can be easily broken up but the size of the boulders used in its construction stopped me - I expected reasonably sized rocks mortared in place like other walls there but the builder used huge rocks probably well over 100 lbs apiece. Not wanting to just roll them into the Womb I didn't touch theby SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
QuoteMr_Wayne "Many campers were set up at the beach..."??? So you're saying shutting down access to Deep Creek Hot Springs works for you? And you're saying non sequiturs work for you???by SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I was at the springs the Saturday prior to the reports by neo and hiker, and it too was a glorious day filled with a very large group of great hot springers young and old. As I think back on it, I believe there were more girls than guys. Lots of people, lots of nakedness, no idiots. Just a fantastic vibe with lots of good conversations. I wonder if it is a summer/winter difference to which boby SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Paul, I've not heard this, but if it is part of a plan to bypass the terribly rutted / blind switchbacked road to the lower parking area, I'm all for it. However, unless Mike can get the Forest Service or someone else to pay for a change, I wouldn't bet on any of it.by SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California

Oh God. She was such a beautiful soul, so enjoyable to be around. She just took everyone as they are. The last time I saw her was this summer when Johnny showed me where the warm springs are. She and her dog were there enjoying the weekend. Before that I saw her just prior to her Australia ski trip, so she regaled us with stories of skiing and making money Down Under. In mid-May 2011 I had a wonderful day at the springs. I didn't want to leave, so I planned to hike out by the full moon. Great plan, but a storm for which I was completely unprepared blew in. The thick, low scudding clouds made it way dark, and I stupidly didn't even have a flashlight with me. It was too dangerous to hike out in the dark, so I "slept" all night in the Womb and hikedby SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I too would love to know when as well as where - was she still living in the shack, or had she moved out of the mountains and into assisted living or in with one of her children? This book seems like it was home-typed and self-published rather than typeset. If 1971 wasn't a typo, it would have been very hard to add any words except at the very end of a chapter. Celtfire, Gert alluded to Sylvia's handicap by saying she is "my pal and always will be", and praising her wonderful disposition and meticulous housekeeping habits. (p.115). Thanks for passing along your first hand experience. Gert's referral to fishermen ties in with another statement that she made, that Deep Creek was periodically stocked with fish. That doesn't happen anymore, dby SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
This is so cool. I have so many questions after reading through it twice and taking notes. I've been to that ranch so many times, it was almost like I could see the growing Bowen family there. Was Gertie's husband Warren D Bowen? She never mentions him by name, but throws in a letter from Warren to his grandkids on the last pages of the book. Parking at Bowen Ranch, you are going to experience a 1000 ft elevation gain coming out. The trail is most definitely not handicapped-accessible, please see it for yourself before trying to take along someone with no business being on the trail. Take her the second time you go if you then think you can get her to the hot springs - and back. Good luck.by SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I love those sorts of discussions at the springs, I wish I'd been there with you and the kids. It is one of the few places I get to interact with Occupy types, and I'm always so interested in their thoughts and motivations. That being said, Warren and O's argument is just silly. If someone is successful, they have taken what is available to all of us and made things happen. They paid more aby SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California

I'll be at DCHS Sat & Sun (11 & 12 Aug). If any forum members are also enjoying the day and feel moved to say hi, I'll be wearing a white Track Town USA hat and not much else.by SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I'm concerned about you leaving tonight, it is a helluva drive, and after dark for a first timer is asking a lot. Also the simplest is to stay at Bowen, but the caretaker Mike's attitude is a roll of the dice especially after dark. My recommendation is to leave very early tomorrow morning.by SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Holy cow Sam Hobbs, you've been registered for three days and haven't been to the springs in 20 years. Here's a programming question for you, brainiac: if you took a Pascal class 20 years ago and hadn't used it since, would it make any sense for you to join a Pascal forum and take offense when you make an incorrect claim about the language, and whine that "none of you understand", andby SilverAvion - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
