I've been going through Bowen Ranch for years and never had a problem. But I always pay my $5 going in and go in and out within the hours listed. Mike charges $10 to spend the night or if you plan to leave after dark on the same day and his signs say this. One day I went in and paid $10 and told him I thought I would be leaving after dark, but wasn't sure. I ended up leaving at dusk. When I got to the house to leave, Mike had $5 change for me. No excuses for his actions, but you would not have had a problem if you had paid attention to the signs and paid what he asks. You are using his property after all. He can pretty much charge what he wants.
