Great place to cool off as usual this weekend even with somewhat challenging swim prior to evening. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-lW92jq7jcby mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Stuck around an extra night at Fairfax and attended the fair. Total money spent ... $1, the cost of admission before 6 pm. One look around and it's obvious the entire premise of the event is to rape people of cash. Too commercialized. I heard it wasn't always like that though. But then again the event does rake in 1/4 of a $billion over a few days so money clouds better judgement. Aside from tby mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I'm amazed on how big some of the fish get, not so much upstream but in the immediate water near the hot pools. I mean the habitat is not that large. Maybe they are feeding off the trash :-) Or maybe they get there during the high tide season and get "stuck". Given that the average lifespan of a freshwater fish is 1-3 years, doesn't give much of a chance to migrate elsewhere. I don't knby mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Repackaged. Not sure if a cover of DM's "Stripped" song was the best choice but wanted something mellow. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-a-OzejwAXYby mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Ironically I'm sitting at the Sheraton Fairplex poolside as I write this, a stone throw away from the gates to the fair. Looks like it is almost ready to go. We didn't make it to DCHS but had an awesome time at Black's last Labor Day weekend. A ton of people, thousands, but the place can handle it. Likely make it back again this weekend although the route south will be a parking lot like last yeaby mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California

This is a documentary that came out last week and accordingly timed as BM is starting in a few days. I rented it via iTunes but it's showing in some theaters. I guess I have mixed feelings about it. It gives a good perspective into Black Rock City and the founders along with some interesting history, and insight into the preparations and construction aspects. However, something is missing. So my understanding is that they snuggle together like that for warmth, but the place is hardly cold, so not sure if I buy that theory any more.by mohave - World Hot Springs
Second the Bill Bryson recommendation. Rather than read it though the audible version is great as he reads his own books. Also if you travel and/or hike in Australia or plan to, his In a Sunburned Country is a good book as well.by mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California

La Fortuna, near the Arenal Volcano. A few photos of nearby wildlife and had to protect privacy on a public forum, but that is one of 23 hot spring pools of varying temperatures. Weather is surprisingly cooler than in Apple Valley, but still in the 80s.by mohave - World Hot Springs
If you zoom in on the area on Google maps or arcgis it has the boundary line. I personally find it interesting. From Bowen Ranch parking to the springs you pass through two fences. If you hike in the Pacific NW we don't even have a fence with Canada! Literally there is just a marker in the ground saying Canada is here and the US is here, one foot apart. I understand their concerns as well. I'm very much for sharing information, and this is after all, an information sharing forum about DCHS, but a while back realized that some people may take advantage of it in a negative way when it comes to DCHS. On that note if you or anyone else feels the map should be taken down, just PM me. Again it is not mine but a repost from an earlier thread. Oh come on! I'm willing to bet $1 the curators were kidding. The only things I would trust coming out of Denmark are Lego toys and Bang & Olufsen audio components. How exactly would you set up a scientific test to determine conclusively that the fish "can mistake the male reproductive organs for their favorite snack". The comments from readers are funny though.by mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I should have said "playing with my app". I just used my previous generation iPhone in a $7.99 REI waterproof pouch with the ProCam app which arguably is the best $1 I ever spent on software :-) My "real" camera is a D700 though I picked up a few years ago, just way too bulky and too much equipment for hiking. There already is a 1 oz HD head video camera on the market and it'sby mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Thanks .... corrected labels so others know for future reference. Hunters looks like it would also be the shortest hike to DCHS.by mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I leveraged a map that was posted earlier by nickrp83 and added labels. This past weekend I used the Freedom Trail to get to DCHS as I had a higher clearance vehicle. I'm sure it's been covered in older posts, but are there any restrictions for parking in the lot that I have three red arrows pointing to? What is the name of this lot? Keep passing by it from Bowen Ranch but my mind draws a blank.by mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Spent the entire time upstream, first close to the springs, then further up. The creek water level is very low and the consistency of the water near the pools is best described as "soup", not very appealing. In the afternoon fell asleep on the beach and went into a dream state, then woke up and thought a wild animal was laying next to me so instinctively pushed it away. I may go chill out tomorrow morning upstream away from the crowds. I guess that's always a good option if the crowd gets bad, and with hot weather probably better to be in the stream.by mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Not surprising it was a good trip during the week. I had my best experiences down there when arriving on a Thursday/Friday, during the week with no more than a handful of people there, as opposed during the weekend. Actually I don't recall a truly great weekend visit, instead the two when I left early because of the idiots the ruined it for everyone. Well I think you still need to multiply by 100 and reduce the denominator by a few billion, but yes, "point well taken" (coincidentally a term coined by Lincoln because I know too many useless facts). In undergrad I took a class called Mathematical Modeling. It was taught by a brilliant professor. Five degrees, well spoken, low key, super sharp. This is one of those cases where the chances of anything happening are very, very, very low ... but if it does happen, it's over. I guess it's a personal choice but a cheap nose piece would certainly resolve the issue. The fact is nobody really knows why thousands of people are exposed to it, even after inhaling contaminated water, and nothing happens ... and then you hear about an incident hereby mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California

I enjoyed watching the Animal Planet series Monsters Inside Me. It's amazing how something so small can cause so much damage. In this case, what is interesting is that you can actually drink water contaminated with this organism and you will not get sick, however, put it near your nose, a different outcome may emerge. Still though 128 cases since 1960s is very, very insignificant (but then try teby mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Quotejobe Mojave, There is no need for filters on the water coming from the source springs at D.C.H.S. It is 99.9999999999999 pure H2O w/almost no minerals. Aint we lucky. Happy Hot Spring ing ! Never tried this one as it is newer tech, but seems like a perfect solution if anyone is concerned at all about drinking from the sources down there: http://www.rei.com/product/837824/sawyer-squeeze-water-filter-plus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXGDCp9EC1Y ... then add one of these for viruses (or drops) and you don't need to bring any water aside from a single bottle: http://www.rby mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
The Crab Cooker source is a life saver. Bottle it and cool it off in the stream. Portable water filter technology is also a backup we use on full day or extended trips. However, no matter how good the filter is, it still will not remove the smaller viruses, so ultraviolet treatment may be needed. I recall in Australia we realized what a life saver these devices are. I believe you are referring to the list from the dept of fish and wildlife because the rest of the article is pathetic. Why would she not call the authorities to have it removed and instead "tried to cut him half with the gardening sheers". It shows the ignorance of the public and the media.
