The Crab Cooker source is a life saver. Bottle it and cool it off in the stream.

Portable water filter technology is also a backup we use on full day or extended trips. However, no matter how good the filter is, it still will not remove the smaller viruses, so ultraviolet treatment may be needed. I recall in Australia we realized what a life saver these devices are. We were close to running out of water and the only water source we came upon was larger than a puddle, but orange-brown in color and likely filled with bacteria from wildlife. It looked nasty. No choice, so triple filtered the thing, added tablets and drank. Tasted heavenly. It must have done a great job as we felt great for the days that followed.
