Please DO NOT repaint the arrows. It is defacing the forest. Not only uncool but also illegal.
As for hiking with kiddos they should carry their own pack including water, some grannola bars and a wistle. Make sure they know that if they are lost to stay put. We have a better chance of finding them that way. Hug a tree.
Your family might want to check out the forestry programs up at the Discovery Center in Big Bear. That will teach them hiking/camping skills needed for this area. Meanwhile there are a lot of us out here not only removing trash but also removing the spray paint, arrows included.
