Mark, from what I know, those rifles would be illegal to have at DCHS, and I believe it is the same for handguns. You could report it too the Sky Forest Ranger station which covers the DCHS area. Unfortunately for anything to be done it basically comes down to the USFS having to catch the offenders in the act. That kind of situation would definitely be uncomfortable to be around. If I encountered something like that I would leave and report it to the USFS when I got in cell phone range on the hike out of the canyon.
I would hope any gun would be illegal around there, ive heard gun shots being fired on different trips also which is uncomfterable when youre trying to relax. I should of hiked out and called but I had just gotten there and it was afternoon already and only had a couple hours till I hiked back out. The guys were just holding them in the open too and when the helicopter came over, I saw them get scared thinking it was for them.
