mgray,
If I lived in Big Bear I would take the Coxey truck trail route. When you click on JoelTDahl's goggle earth link it is the second option. It shows that it takes about 6 minuets longer but ---
It is much shorter by miles, which is better for the gas saved.
It is more scenic. It is a beautiful forest and you may encounter some wild life.
Go to Fawnskin which is a small community on the north side of the lake and take forest route 3n14 or the Coxey truck trail for @ 24 miles. This road dead ends into Bowen ranch road. Turn left go @ 4 miles to the Bowen ranch. Pay the 5 or 10 dollars to park your car. Hike the 2.2 miles to the hot springs
In my opinion this is the best route.
Enjoy the Hot springs and please post a trip report here.
Glad 2 help !
