I didn't have mitral valve prolapse, I had mitral valve regurgitation, a condition in which the mitral valve doesn't close tightly, which allows blood to flow backward instead of out of the ventricle into the body's circulatory system. Both valves were repaired, not replaced. In the long run repaired valves work better and last longer than composite or porcine replacements.
As many as one in five people over age 55 have some degree of mitral valve regurgitation.
