Hi folks, I'm vaguely planning a trip to hit up 5 palms hot springs (plus a few other nearby HS) sometime in the next few months. I've never been there, and it's been on my HS bucket list for awhile. I'm planning to go with my wife and toddler and baby. When I mentioned to my wife that 5 Palms is apparently in the middle of nowhere in the desert, not all that far from the Mexican borderby JoelTDahl - California Hot Springs
Hi all-- I went to the springs yesterday. Checked the DOT website, and there was no longer a posting about Highway 173, so I drove up 18. Soon as I got atop the mountains, though the roads were plowed, I started seeing "chains required" signs (are they required up there in the winter, regardless of conditions?) and broke traction a couple of times. So I turned around and drove bacby JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Thanks, Wizard. Forecast for tomorrow is for clear skies, so I'm hopeful. I'll check Rick's DOT link before I go in the morning.by JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Thanks for the DOT link, Rick! I'll check the alerts Thursday night, and if the requirement is not lifted, I'll go elsewhere.by JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Hi Wizard, I just read Rick's post about the winter storm warning, and it seems probable that on Fridaythe Bradford Ridge hike will be at worst a little dusted with snow (I'll pack accordingly), but what about the drive to the Bradford Ridge trailhead on Highway 173? I'll be driving a sedan, and I'm guessing (haven't googlemapped it yet) that I'll need to drive past Big Bear to get thereby JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Thanks, Wizard! Sounds like Bradford Ridge will be the way to go on Friday. Might as well try something new. Thanks for the info! I'll be sure to post a trip report here. Joelby JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Hi all-- Looks like I might unexpectedly have off work on Friday, so I'm thinking of going to DCHS. It'll likely be my last time before my first child arrives in late February! With the recent rain, I expect that the stream crossing might not be doable, and that Bowen Ranch Road might be rough on my poor little sedan. If so, I'd need to try the approach from Big Bear, but I've never donby JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California

Quotespeakeasy How about you consider other people who came to enjoy the springs? Are your kids potty trained already? Is there a possibility for an accident? Are they going to be freaked out by nudity? Are their noise gonna disturb piece and tranquility people seek? Heh. Those of us with children are probably going to laugh their asses off when they read what I'm about to write, but . . . I aby JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Hi Neo Geo, I'm terrible with names, and even worse with screennames, but I'd probably recognize your face! I likely was the one whom you chatted with about a month or so ago. My father (who lives in Baltimore) flew out to California for my 30th birthday, and I took him to DCHS while he was out here. Remember chatting with several different people at the HS that day. Hi all -- thank you so much for all your input and helpful suggestions/info! I'm going to pass the link to this thread along to the infant's parents, to help them decide if they're up for a Deep Creek Hot Springs trip or not! Joelby JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Hi all-- My girlfriend's sister, brother-in-law, and my girlfriend's 7-month-old nephew are coming to town to visit in the near future. I was thinking that taking them all to DCHS might be fun, but there are concerns about whether a baby at the hot springs is a good idea. Does anybody have any thoughts on -- or any experience with -- infants at the hot springs? I'm guessing the anniversaryby JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Hi folks, My girlfriend and I were planning to go backpacking this coming Labor Day Weekend to Jordan Hot Springs, but we just saw news stories indicating that the Fish Fire is in the area, less than 10 miles away from JHS and heading toward it. The fire is on the other side of the Kern, and unlikely to cross it, but we're not taking any chances. Anybody here have any good suggestions foby JoelTDahl - California Hot Springs
Found at DCHS on Friday, 1/4/13 (and just found it in my pack now -- I'm lazy about unpacking after a trip): Expensive-looking item manufactured by GoPro. Found a little below the Contemplation Pool. PM me a more complete description, and if it matches the item, we can figure out how to return it to you.by JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
This seemed like a useful thread to start on this forum. Post description of found (or lost) items here.by JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Hi folks, I know use of OHVs is forbidden on Bowen Ranch property. Is it illegal on the BLM land around DCHS? I saw some folks with an OHV parked on the beach across the river from the springs yesterday, and wanted to warn them that they could get ticketed for that, but was suddenly unsure if that was the case. I've seen Remington with both nude and clothed bathers, depending on who's there at the time. Little Caliente is fairly hard to access, so I'd imagine that it has a fair number of nude bathers, as there will be little company there. Earlier posts suggest that the road to Little Caliente is currently closed, but there's a way to hike in. I wouldn't recommend nude-hiking that one, though, asby JoelTDahl - California Hot Springs
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/dyfi/events/ci/15141521/us/index.html Did anybody at DCHS at 8:07AM on Sat, 4/28 feel this? I felt it just a tiny bit in Pasadena. Epicenter was near San Bernardino, and it was magnitude 4.1. Not huge, but big enough to feel if you're closer to it. I've always wondered what it would be like to experience an earthquake while at DCHS.by JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Thanks, Paul! Gaviota is actually not a bad idea. Will think about that. Though not 100% decided, I'm actually now vaguely leaning toward Hobo campground, despite what I said in my OP. The drive from Hobo campground to Remington isn't bad, and arguably it would be nice to be set apart from the party atmosphere of Remington when we're sleeping at night. Plus, the Kern is pretty no matterby JoelTDahl - California Hot Springs

Hi folks, My girlfriend is fairly non-outdoorsy, but wants me to introduce her to The Great Outdoors in baby steps, starting with a car-camping trip sometime next month. Her only requirements are a) car-camping, not backpacking, and b) there needs to be at least an outhouse, if not an actual flush toilet facility. No squatting in the bushes. I'm googling around for car-camping options,by JoelTDahl - California Hot Springs
Thanks, Jobe & Paul (and Hiker). We'll have to think about whether we want to risk it . . .by JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Hey folks, Can anybody post current info on the state of Bowen Ranch Road? Last time I was at DCHS was in September. I know we've had a pretty mild winter, but you never know. Have the recent snows out there overly messed with the road? Has it been graded recently? A bunch of friends and I are planning to go this weekend, and we all drive regular-size sedans, not high-clearance vehicles.by JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Hey Paul, I'd say it was about three hours in, two hours out. We were a large group, so we went slower. Joelby JoelTDahl - California Hot Springs
Hey Paul, That's a cold pool, formed by an artificial dam in a creek (much overgrown by ivy). It's on the hike in from Cold Springs Flat, via the map I mentioned. The pictures in question are geotagged, so if you click on the picture location map to the right of it in Picassa, you'll be able to see the exact location. Joelby JoelTDahl - California Hot Springs
A group of friends and I hiked in to Little Caliente Hot Springs last Saturday from the Cold Springs Trailhead on East Camino Cielo Road, via this route that I posted awhile back. The trail is in very good condition, and the bushwacking portion by Gibraltar Reservoir is even easier to follow than it was the last time I went. Somebody recently put up streamers along the trail, making it muchby JoelTDahl - California Hot Springs
Thanks very much to Madrox for posting about this way back when. It made me put Jordan Hot Springs on my bucket list of springs to check out, and it certainly delivered. My brother flew in from Arizona Friday night of Labor Day Weekend, we hiked in on Saturday, hung out at the springs all day Sunday, and then hiked back out again on Monday. Very nice place, and just difficult enough to getby JoelTDahl - California Hot Springs
QuotePaul P. As of this morning, Friday June 10, the fire is 5% contained, and firefighters predict full containment tonight, So far its burned 75 acres. Hopefully no structures or people in the village are threatened. Anyone know what caused the fire? No clue what caused the fire, but the link posted earlier in this thread, to the real-time posting of the fire containment effort, indicates thaby JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
My condolences on your father's passing. I was there on Wednesday. There was little to no trash or graffiti about.by JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I had a weekday off work yesterday, so I headed out to DCHS, as I don't care to visit the springs on the weekends when Disneyland-esque crowds are there, and I usually have weekends off work. Bowen Ranch Road is in reasonably good condition. I made it all the way through with my regular-size sedan, no problems. There are currently two spots where there's water flowing across the road, butby JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
