Making access to Deep Creek easier will only increase the impact of human visitation. The Hotsprings are within a designated roadless area. This status is like a wilderness area without the restrictions that go along with the official designation. I feel its wise to find ways to reduce the impact and protect the wild, natural nature of the Deep Creek canyon.
The USFS had good reasons to bulldoze the old road down to the creek. And, the old road that went by the Moss Ranch crosses private property without an legal easment for public access. The JF4 to JF3 route provides a viable way for someone without 4WD to access the trail into Deep Creek. Just like anywhere else in California, there is a possibility of vandalism. Parking at the Bowen Ranch reduces the risk but cars have been vandalized there as well.
I have no problem with the $4 a day parking fee at the Bowen Ranch. Its cheaper than LAX, NYC or the meter on the street. If someone has an issue with paying to park, they can always park elsewhere. There's a lot of places on BLM lands that are free, no adventure pass required.
