If you drive up from route 18 near Lake Arrowhead, it is paved all the way. ( Great joy and gratitude.)
I drive from the Claremont/Upland area and prefer Bradford ridge route. Yes it is is longer than the northern based routes, but it saves in HOURS of driving. If you are moderately fit, it is a good hike, but not impossible. I take one camel-bak (sp?) and am quite comfortable with the hike. Regardless the suggestions, I have never tasted the water at the creak. And yet I have only been, at worst, slightly dehydrated. (When I was very much overweight, it became significantly dehydrated. )
I always hike it as a free hike and have met, at most, 2 people per trip. Note, this is only on the weekdays. The "stories" about the weekends discourage me from testing this route.
There is a > 50% chance I will hike it about 10 am on Friday. Enjoy.
