In saying " Nothing ", I think John is more specifically refering to his later comment in the same paragraph: " Our tiny, futile and utterly puny efforts to stop the Goliath of climate change are downright laughable. ". What do you see out in the real world, hear from the world's top scientist? The climate situation is getting worse far faster than the scientist realized even a couple of years ago. The Kyoto efforts as far as impact are a drop in the bucket compared to what would realistically need to be done to have some substantial impact on climate deterioration. Nothing of importance was accomplished in the recent climate issues meetings. China is getting into coal use in a big way. Now the EU is talking about ramping up its coal use for power. Countries will demand power, and if it means burning coal then thats what they will do even despite the insanity of the consequences it will bring. Stuff like changing lights to compact flourescent and driving hybrids are very tiny efforts when it comes to the vast scope of the climate change problem. Carbon trading and carbon sequestration is a joke, a bunch of nonsense. Even though the US is in a very serious economic dowturn the CO2 production from the quicly growing countries of China and India alone will completely overwhelm any reductions in hydrocarbon usage here in the US. Diesel use for creating electric power is also ramping up throughout the world because poorer countries can't afford the oil and natural gas to make power anymore. James Hansen ( top NASA Climate Scientist )recently stated that in his opinion we are all ready over critical limits for CO2 levels. With all of the rampant burning around the world of oil, natural gas, forest, wood for the poor, more fires because of drought, increased usage because of quickly growing populations, there's nothing I see of any meaningfullness that tells me humankind has done anything of real significance to change the dire course of rapid climate degredation. John does make very dire predictions about what he see's to be our future. I hope he's wrong. I hope things don't get as bad as he predicts. But I also think the way world events are developing, we do have big trouble and vast changes coming for all of us.
