I've always been a "big dog" person and didn't understand little dogs too well. It came as a surprise for me to learn that the Pomeranian is related most closely to huskies and malamutes, its a sled dog basically that was bred to its smaller size.
I grew up with a St Bernard in Europe and then a lab here but it's interesting that you don't know what you will get when mixing large breeds. The photo below is my parents' current dog. Dad was a golden lab and mom was a mix of husky and german shepherd. She is a small thing and has short legs, big ears, fur of a collie and has been mistaken by kids for a fox.
