GOLETA, CA…. A wildland fire broke out shortly before 8:00 AM today off State Highway 154 near Painted Cave on Los Padres National Forest’s Santa Barbara Ranger District. Los Padres firefighters, together with local cooperators, are employing all available resources to contain the Lookout Fire.
A full response from U.S. Forest Service firefighters included eight retardant-dropping air tankers, six water-dropping helicopters, and nearly 250 personnel. The air tankers were able to lay retardant around 50 percent of the fire’s perimeter, aiding ground crews working to establish containment lines.
Santa Barbara County officials have ordered the evacuation of the Painted Cave community, and issued preliminary evacuation warnings to residents in the West Camino Cielo, Hidden Valley, and Trout Club areas.
The fire is estimated to have burned 25 acres and is currently 40 percent contained. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
