I've been to that hot spring many times, and it's great. However, people do have to be careful there. Some of the locals don't take too kindly to the influx of "outsiders". Car vandalism occurs a lot. Also, the police periodically raid the place when there are a lot of drunk people and drug use. And as you stated, theft does occur there, so keep your eye on your stuff.
