Went to the DCV meeting at the springs yesterday and got to see the flooding results firsthand. I agree with the concern about driftwood being used for fires, and DCV will address the issue with the USFS to determine the best course of action.
The good news is that we won't have to worry about the pile of Scottish broom being a fire hazard for a while since it had such a good soaking!
Sam D. is right that trees very near the water don't develop very deep root systems, because so much water is near the surface. The tree-planting volunteer (non-DCV) was at the springs yesterday and was happy to see how well his newest donations survived the flooding. Thanks to all who helped to keep them well-watered during the dry months!! One of the stakes holding a tree snapped, but the trunk of the tree was supple enough to bend without breaking.
I'm always glad to see a good rain, and flooding of the pools now and then is well worth it. The anniversary pool has already been cleaned, and DCV members got a good start on the mud in the Womb.
