The Spot device isn't always all the reliable. For example: a friend was hiking from Onion Valley to Kings Canyon and sent several check-in messages. Only one actually made it through and left me very worried until he showed up at the trailhead. He's now using an inReach which can also send text messages. Works a lot better.
