I found AWD with a great suspension makes more sense than ground clearance. I tend to use Hertz vehicles as I'm on business here each week and the first time I had a Prius, which was rough. Same with another compact a week later, a Hyundai Elentra. This weekend I had an Infiniti AWD Q37x sedan with the "snow" button, which prevents wheel spin on gravel or snow no matter how hard you press on the accelerator. I was going 40 mph with minimal shaking and felt like I was on train tracks. It came in handy as well over the rough parts ... the car would just crawl over the sandy dips.
