Kitadrift- that sounds like a potentially serious situation. Do you have any way to contact them? Did they have a cell phone? It was good you called 911. You may also want to contact the Arrowhead Ranger Station at 909-382-2782 and tell them about the situation. Provide them with the best description you can of your son and his girlfriend. Others who regularly post here may have some additional ideas.
