Tips for desert travel

# Let someone know your trip route, destination and return date. If your plans change, let them know. Always take a companion.

# Take a minimum of one gallon of water per person per day.

# Make sure your vehicle is in good operating condition and has a full tank of gas. Check tires and belts before leaving. Take a tire jack, some tools and tow rope.

# Dress in light-colored, loose-fitting clothing for heat, and several layers of clothing for cooler weather. Wear a hat.

# Take sunscreen and a first-aid kit.

# Carry a cell phone or citizens band radio. Stay on dirt roads, and avoid traveling cross-country. Even four-wheel-drive vehicles can become stuck in sand.

# If your vehicle becomes stuck, put solid material such as floor mats or vegetation under tires to gain traction.

# Avoid strenuous activity in the heat. Stay in the shade of your vehicle.

# Make yourself visible if you become stuck. A column of smoke can be seen for miles.
