Like I said, any vehicle... including hiking boots, can cause damage if the user doesn't stay on the trail, or uses it when it's too wet. It's mostly dependent on the brain and care of the user. That's what we're really talking about here: Motive... intent... lack of respect or lack or intellegence.
Horses on the other hand... well those riders have rights too I guess. And so do motorbikes, ATVs and 4X4s. And I guess tank drivers too...
But there's places that the more destructive and heavier stuff (mechanical or bio-organism) just should not be allowed to go. Let them have their own place. If they want to enjoy primitive areas and the springs... walk. I put away my bicycle when I found out it was a no-no.
And pack out what they bring in...
