A lot of these guys don't realize how much the ordinance is protecting them from personal harm. They have no idea how angry people are. I'm talking about people who don't go to meetings. Old school desert. With the ordinance, I have a tool to convince people not to take the law into their own hands but to let the sheriff handle it. I can point to the fact that people are getting cited and the sby OMG - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
How to bridge the worlds? -Not to be negative but it seems like I can't broach the topic without a whole lot of nasty words spewing forth from 'desert destroyers' -which is also a pretty awful thing to be called. I was walking in a red wood forest and came upon a self-proclaimed 'ditto head'. He had gone out into nature to see what all the fuss was about. Where is that written? -and will it really provide protection against a law suit? My neighbor and I had some pretty heated discussions about this. I told her if that if she wanted to create an ORV route across her land under the ordinance their wasn't a whole lot I could do about it. -But she was afraid of the liability. I was advised by the sheriff that brandishing a weapon is not ok. Actually, he was advising a delicate looking woman in her 80's and I just happened to be there. -I had the feeling she could shoot straight though. The sheriff made it clear that anything we did to protect our property except for calling the sheriff would put us in much more hot water then the trespasser. -Which is really frustrby OMG - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Riders can find out (or anyone really) by looking up the tax information/running the address/ parcel number on a piece of property. It's public information. I've suggested on other forums that owners who want ORVers (or don't mind) should post an ORV welcome sign. Most won't take on the liability, though -even if they think ORVs are awesome.
