Now that you mention it, I do remember that these birds were white, with black tipped wings. I sure looked like those birds had the curved neck posture of pelicans but they were a good ways off. Are there any pelicans with black tipped wings? I have seen flocks of pelicans for sure at the Colorado River a few times. Maybe the ones we saw from Luna Mtn were geese.
