San Bernardino County Supervisor Neil Derry wants the county to take possession of the unpaved portion of Highway 173, which links Lake Arrowhead and the Victor Valley.
Caltrans closed the roadway this week due to safety and maintenance concerns.
Derry's announcement Wednesday came in the wake of concerns expressed by dozens of mountain residents who say the roughly 5-mile one-lane road, the last unpaved road in the state highway system, serves as an evacuation route during emergencies
"If we don't take it over and keep it open for emergency access," he said, "the Forest Service will receive the property and the road, through erosion and natural courses, will no longer be there in just a few years.
"Our goal is to keep it as an emergency route for citizens to evacuate off the mountain and provide emergency access for fire and law enforcement officials when issues happen."
The road would only be open for emergencies, said Derry, whose 3rd District includes much of the San Bernardino Mountains.,,,,,,,
