Good post Katrina. Most desert residents just want a little peace and quiet around their homes. The last thing I want next door is a motocross track!
Anyone who has been coming out to the Deep Creek/Juniper Flats area can see the escalating damage to both public and private lands from disrespectful and illegal OHV users. Arrastre canyon has become the poster child for OHV abuse and is getting national attention. The illegal hillclimb above the falls is now as wide as the interstate and erosive ruts are digging deeper and deeper with each passing rain. Illegal trespass by motorcycle riders into Deep Creek Canyon has caused extensive erosive damage as well. These riders have been cutting the fences and allowing the cattle to stray off the BLM lands and down into the creek which is habitat for endangered and threatened species.
One has to wonder why Supervisors Mitzelfelt and Derry are catering to the OHV lobbies and excluding their constituent residents and landowners. National OHV websites have organized OHV activists from across the nation to bombard our local elected officials with letters and phone calls in opposition to ord 3973. In a county with multiple designated OHV areas on public lands, there is no good reason to allow OHV staging in rural residential neighborhoods. This letter hits the nail squarely on the head.
