2 french UCLA students got in trouble after reading your (student reader) site and yelp: http://www.deathvalley.com/dvtalk/messages/708767.shtml They mentioned student reader and yelp as the primary sources. They were fortunate to be found this time of year and they were fortunate it rained a day before so there was some water in a mud paddle.by Sam D. - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Yes, I drew a map and emailed it along with the pics and directions to get there. I hope it's a blank. What scares me is that I found 3 feet away from the pool. I hope it was the only one.by Sam D. - California Hot Springs
"...we received your email message with photos and will be having one of our bomb technicians looking at the photos or device. We will be contacting you of what we find or determine. We may be passing on the information to the Imperial County Fire Department as they probably have jurisdiction in that area. Thanks for calling us."by Sam D. - California Hot Springs
Thank you, Paul. Below are the URLs. I hope what I found is not a mine. The authorities who came to the springs were definately BLM Rangers not the sheriff. http://flic.kr/p/cpJZbq http://flic.kr/p/cpJYbjby Sam D. - California Hot Springs
I always wanted to visit 5 Palms Wwarm Springs oasis, so this weekend I went there to check it out. The temperature in the sun was about 110F making 90F water a nice soak. It seemed to be 10 degrees cooler under the shade the palm trees provided. I’ve never seen so much broken glass on the ground even though I visit a lot of springs that get routinely trashed. I recall there is one right after the fork - the right goes to Big Caliente and the left to Little. The crossing is about 25 yards from the fork. If I recall correctly, there might be another small one further down. I think the frog was used to get some fed money to fix the road. I've never heard of this frog prior to this year.by Sam D. - California Hot Springs
The road to Little Caliente is closed due to some frogs in the water crossings. Only bicycle, pedestrian and horse access is allowed.by Sam D. - California Hot Springs
AM weekdays should not be bad unless it’s the week of 4th of July. It’s going to be pretty hot and the pools might be under water due to mountain snow melt. Ping me a week prior to your visit for more info on the water level. I‘ve never camped at Hobo - why pay if parking lot of Remington is free unless you like the outhouse at Hobo. Hobo is also visited by rafters more often during summerby Sam D. - California Hot Springs
Rope swing safety - if you ask then you should not do it. The dangers are not in the rope swing. Here’s what can possibly go wrong: the river might be too low to jump and you break your legs or scalp or the currents might be too strong or there is an underneath boulder/log you hit or you have muscles spasms from the cold water or a snake is waiting for you on the shore or the tree the rope isby Sam D. - California Hot Springs
You did not update your posts about Deep Creek and Saline with my comments Few more points: "There is firewood for the communal pits" - Only for one communal fire pit with benches around. Based on your wording one could infer that it's OK to take the wood. It's not and there is a sign by the pile. Bring your own firewood and clean up your ashes/charcoal. Looks like your site is going to generate even more visitors. Not being a protectionist..., but I wander whether the springs can sustain more people. For DCHS: I would add that the place features 5-6 helicopter rescues per year. The temperatures during day time might reach over 115F. People should not expect that "some have a little extra water to share with the thirsty". Theby Sam D. - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Seekin the road report. Has it been fixed? Is the road from the house to the parking lot passable in a sedan? Any info is greatly appreciated.by Sam D. - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Thanks for the heads up, Paul. I made it a habit to check that site once a day. I fixed the pipe assembly to the square pool at Big Caliente. But the whole assembly is shaky and will require a complete rework. The hoses to the creek pools are leaking big time. If you go there please bring something to cut the hoses, put extensions and then attach lengths of hose. I hope the road will reoby Sam D. - California Hot Springs
According to Los Padres National Forest site, As of September 27, 2011 the road to Big Caliente Hot Springs and Rock Campground are also OPEN. The road to P Bar Camp, and Mono Campground and Little Caliente Hot Springs is also OPEN. SPECIAL NOTE: Due to severe road damage to the road near the Little Caliente Hot Springs, there is no motor vehicle access for the last 1/4 mile on that rby Sam D. - California Hot Springs

Appreciate the info, Paul. I'll try to make it to Big Caliente but not certain when. Please take a lot of pictures if you get there before me. I no longer owe my plumbing business, so I do not have any fittings. Knowing before hand is the key. Many thanks in advance, Sam D.by Sam D. - California Hot Springs
Thanks, Rick. How far is the hike to Litlle and Big Caliente from where one can park? I can not find the places mentioned on my maps.by Sam D. - California Hot Springs
If I can only get there... Years ago I managed a plumbing business. So once I get there I will investigate and post what needs to be done to fix that leak at B. Caliente. I got a huge list of improvements I'd like to make to both springs. This year I thought was going to be the year I could be there once a week due to work in Santa Barbara. Unfortunately, the road is not fixed.by Sam D. - California Hot Springs
Called the Santa Barbara office to inquire about the road closure to Big and Little Caliente HS 2 days ago. I was told it's going to be Oct. I think I got the formula for the rangers answer: Current month + one month for the road to reopen. When I called in April I was told the road was going to be reopen in May. When I called in May I was told the road was going to be reopen in June.by Sam D. - California Hot Springs

Be very careful near that river. 16 people drowned this year alone. Here's the story of one who drowned near the springs: http://www.bakersfield.com/news/local/x965389881/DYING-IN-THE-KERN-RIVER-Drownings-up-75-percent-this-high-water-year http://www.turnto23.com/news/27898036/detail.html More stories of folks drowning in the river: http://www.kvsun.com/articles/2011/07/25/news/doc4e1by Sam D. - California Hot Springs
I do it all the time but it all depends on your conditioning. Pour cold water on your hat and drink a lot of water even if you are not thirsty. Keep in mind that you won't be giving yourself much room for an error. This Wed forecast is 100F in a shade. It might get 120F+ in the sun. If you fall and unable to walk, be prepared to spend entire day on the trail.by Sam D. - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California

Guns tend to intimidate people. I always get uneasy feeling when I go to Caliente HS and see a bunch of hunters stop by. My goodness the hunting season got cancelled this year. Last year I saw 11 year old girl carrying 3 rifles and throwing them on the ground in a completely careless manner. I ask her to point the rifles away from me and her dad told me to leave. I remember last year 2 idioby Sam D. - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I was thinking along the same lines yesterday, Wizard. The large trash bags I use at other hot springs are not the best option at the DCHS where they need to be carried longer distances. Also, not everyone have the same strength to lift heavy loaded bags. I will switch to smaller size bags though on the day I collected 9 full bags it would require over 45 supermarket-size bags. Just came back from the springs. I arrived at 10:30 at the BR. About 500 yards from the parking lot there was an abandoned campsite. It took me almost 30 min to collect all the empties and nasties and most of the broken glass. That area will be under my supervision as I can easily spend 5-6 hours trying to bag all the small pieces of broken glass. So, every time I go I am going to stop bby Sam D. - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
As I was driving this morning to the DCHS, I saw a fire brush on i15 on the Cajon Pass. I am glad it's been extinguished.by Sam D. - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
tjnthesky, bags on the trail might not be indicative of somebody's dumping. There is a long standing tradition that if a person takes an extra trash bag and gets him/herself exhausted he/she can park it on the trail for somebody else to take it few hundred yards further. Eventually, this bag will make it to the top. I am beginning to rethink this tradition as I've seen such bags torn by coby Sam D. - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Thanks for the report, Jobe. Sorry to hear that the perpetual pooper(s) made it to your parking spot. I collected and hauled lbs of TP last Thursday. Are you parked near the wooden gate near the lower parking lot? If so, may I ask you for the phone number from the flyer about the missing dog, please? It's a tear off. The poster was attached to the wooden gate. Many thanks and have aby Sam D. - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
