Hi - There have been changes at Bowen, and from friends who have gone to the springs of late, seemingly different things being said about the future of access to the springs from the Ranch. I am myself in a fallow period in terms of hot springs visits, too much work and life stuff going on to get out there much lately. Hope that changes soon. (It will.) But I haven't seen much commentary on tby neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Love to see all those temperature readings.by neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I have seen no follow up on this in the press since the event occurred. Does anyone else know anything about what happened?by neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Cougar is/was so beautiful and lush, that is hard to hear and imagine. I love that spring.by neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Yes, Wizard, it is or sounds off - the story as reported. Sam, these two brothers were at the springs on Sunday, by the end of the day one brother reported the other as missing, but then seemed to go missing himself. The body was found Monday. People at the springs on Sunday said these brothers were in quite good physical shape. But they were both deaf. One perhaps partially-blind. This is what Iby neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
In other bad news for hot springs, before hearing of this I had been reading stories about the fire that broke out Sunday up in Oregon, all around Cougar Hot Springs. Some wondering if that springs will still exist after this.by neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Woke up this morning to this story from yesterday, Sunday to Monday, at the springs. At first, as with some recent tragedies, I hoped that it might be the case that something had happened at The Falls or elsewhere. But no, this happened at the springs. https://ktla.com/2018/08/21/missing-hiker-found-dead-in-hot-springs-near-apple-valley-brother-rescued-sbsd/by neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California

All this has been discussed on the board if you search for the trail name. There is really no "less steep" way - some people by mistake take a spur trail down a _really_ steep canyon, into Family Canyon to be more precise, as opposed to continuing on the only a bit less harrowingly steep regular ridge trail. This is at the trail's end, it's last 1/2 mile or so. It's easy to see on a topby neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Search on this board for the "Bradford Ridge" - you will find older discussion and even maps posted, lots of information. Basically the trail is a bit harder (especially in the heat) than the Bowen Ranch goat trail. It is a little longer, about 3 miles each way. It goes up and down the big steep ridge on the hot spring side of the creek, just down creek a bit from the springs. So the trby neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I don't have advice for you on the bullfrogs except to agree with you that they have increased in number at the springs a lot. I just want to applaud what you have done again for the springs, and our friend too with the graffiti removal. I think nature opened up the heavens and the rain on you both as a thank you.by neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
So gross. I really hate this.by neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Speaking of "off the grid" - the OC Weekly ran a fluff piece on 6/21 on the springs, filled with "information" of the wrong variety, the variety of being wrong. And much foolishness, not much wisdom and care taking and helpful information spread. https://www.ocweekly.com/off-the-grid-at-deep-creek-hot-springs-summer-travel-2018/by neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California

With the amount of cell phone picture taking down there as it is, the place is only saved for the moment by being "off the grid." Otherwise it would be snapchat, IG stories, every second - My wife finds it hard that when I'm out there for a day or two, we can only be in touch when I hike up the hills back toward my car, but sometimes you have to be off the grid, thankful for places thatby neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Sounds like a great visit. I've enjoyed the springs with visiting yoga retreat groups, coming in from Joshua Tree. Some of my favorite times at the springs too ....by neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
As these things go, some hikers on Facebook immediately posted a photo of my new friend - he of the foot brace, hiking like Strider from the LOTR. Their caption: "Some soaked their entire bodies! Many PCT thru-hikers relax here before moving on their way towards Canada!" https://scontent-lax3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/33342381_1181156805393725_4894793018286014464_n.jpg?_nc_cby neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Tuesday visit to the springs. Less critters than 2 weeks back, already. The squirrel army was diminished. No rattler encounters. The velvet "ants" were back - the sweet/deadly wasps. Crawling all over the beach in the late day sun. Suddenly it was yucca blossom time - big flower towers everywhere. Hike in, I was on my own, way back behind me a couple from Silverlake, a dude ... who I noby neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Yes, it was a few summers back that the squirrels ate my small beer carrier, and inside it, they got a nice feast of my ice packs. They literally ate them. ?? But I have to say, I've never seen so many squirrels at the springs as I did Friday. Literally an army. And bold beyond bold. If they are bringing out hungry snakes, maybe their number will be less soon...but for the moment...they are EVERYby neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I've seen the Jobe critter showing up in a few instagram photos myself, so was hoping he might still be in his natural habitat. Also saw now that it is PCT hiker season a really beautiful portrait of Coppertone recently. But I have not myself run into him at the springs in a few years, probably two years.by neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I promised a short trip report, like I used to do. I was able to run out to the springs on Friday. The day had two main themes: critter day and PCT hiker day. Right away turning onto Bowen Ranch Road you could tell the desert was alive with critters. Immediately I saw jackrabbits and desert squirrels running across the road, in all directions. This led to seeing something I've never seen beforby neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Amazing post Wizard. I have dug out the Phoenix Pool but have not done too much vacuuming / cleaning of the pools beyond emptying them and getting some of the algae off during that. Having recently been at the springs, I would say the Phoenix Pool and Serenity/Crab are all in good shape. The Anniversary Pool needs a real good scrubbing. It was pristine back in February - really overgrown now. Theby neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I wasn't there yesterday but was told about the crowd, the biggest some friends had seen. I wanted to come to help with the clean up crew and volunteers. They got help from the Forest Service, who arranged to have some of their people there too, and a truck on the road below the first hill down from Bowen to take all the trash out. I was told the Rangers came down 2x actually. At the end of tby neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California

There's no problem with the road on the Ranch to the lower parking - The Bowen Ranch road itself is in rougher condition than normal - just watch for some big rocks and some rough patches. But otherwise nothing most cars can't handle.by neogeo - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California

LA Fire department posted on their Instagram that they had to send via helicopter personnel on the weekend to Hesperia and Bowen Ranch to aid in a _horse_ rescue. A horse, their post says, fell "300 feet" off the trail and could not move. A person responding to their posting says the horse fell only 10 feet down off the trail, and I hope it is the latter. Ducks in a Row: Anniversary Pool (rectangle, up top) flows down to the Womb (big, round, deep), flows down to the Serenity Pool. Next to the Serenity pool, with a pipe for drinking water, is a trough up against the rock face: the Crab Cooker. The hottest pool. In the creek, up creek, is the Phoenix Pool.
