Thanks! Will check out that map!by JoelTDahl - California Hot Springs
Hi folks, My girlfriend and I are hiking to Willett Hot Springs in the Los Padres National Forest this weekend. We're planning to do it either as a one-night camping trip, or a really leisurely two-night camping trip. Anybody who's been there before have any tips/suggestions for my trip? I've already got a Forest Adventure Parking pass for the trailhead, and am getting a fire permit (foby JoelTDahl - California Hot Springs
Quotejobe Please, post a trip report after you find them. Been meaning to get to this, but as we all know, stuff comes up. A couple of weeks ago (June 15th), I made it out to Big Caliente Hot Springs, and, a few hundred yards further on, and more rustic, Agua Caliente hot springs. As I mentioned previously on this forum, I'm wary of driving the road to Big Caliente or Little Calienteby JoelTDahl - California Hot Springs
Anybody know how geothermal spring sources like the one at Deep Creek are located in the first place? Is it pretty much dumb luck, or is there some sort of methodology behind knowing where to look? Are there any tools used to detect where such a spring in likely to be, and where one might want to build Deep-Creek-like tubs to collect the heated water?by JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I recommend going on a weekday, if at all possible. Get there early in the morning, too. That's a fairly reliable way of avoiding most of the riff-raff. Also, not that this helps with your immediate trip, but go there sometime October through March, and you'll find the springs to be a lot cleaner, and to have even less chance of riff-raff ruining it.by JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
http://tinyurl.com/y93a372 The "A" beginning point on the googlemaps is the intersection of Main Street in Hesperia, and interstate 15. The "B" end point is Bowen Ranch. They charge $5 or $10 (cash) per person for parking on their land, and they give you a map to the springs from there. You don't even really need the map, though, as the trail is fairly obvious.by JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
QuotePaul P. Also Joel I would not recommend parking your vehicle at the Mojave Dam Spillway trailhead to hike into the springs from there. Cars are regularly vandalized at that location. Good to know -- thanks!by JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Thanks for all the input, everyone! Not sure when I'm next going to make it out to D.C.H.S. from where I live in LA, but it's good to have an alternative route on hand, should I ever want to go, but then see trip reports that indicate that the water crossing is dangerous.by JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I've been noticing some trip reports here recently about how very high the river is right now, and how therefore very dangerous the crossing is. I know how to get to D.C.H.S from the Bowen Ranch side. If I wanted to get there from the Pacific Crest Trail side (so, be able to skip the river crossing altogether), what would be the best (and shortest day-hike) way to do that? Where would I paby JoelTDahl - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
QuoteJoelTDahl Can't really report on the condition of the road, except for the portion from Mono campground to the springs themselves, because rather than driving the road in, I hiked in via this route. As for the portion of the road I can report on, it seems in good condition for a really narrow dirt road with lots of potholes and bumps. I think it is theoretically possible to do it in aby JoelTDahl - California Hot Springs
Are there any basic safety items one ought to carry, in case of getting bitten by a rattlesnake? What I've been told before is that "the best rattlesnake safety device is a car key -- get to a hospital as soon as possible" and "don't panic, don't run, keep your heartrate down so that the venom doesn't circulate that far in your body before you get to the hospital." Quotehiker If you are a serious hiker (and backpacker) you can try Willett Hot Spring along Sespe Creek above Ojai. Its 10 miles one way with several creek crossing so you won't get a crowd. The trail is good with gentle grades, but its still 10 miles. The hot springs are above Sespe Creek in a canyon and flow through plastic pipe into a large (10-12' diameter) round hard plastic tub that can beby JoelTDahl - California Hot Springs
QuoteSam D. Hi! Please post the road and pools conditions report. Many thanks in advance, Sam D. Whoops! Sorry -- totally slipped my mind, until I checked the forum again just now. Can't really report on the condition of the road, except for the portion from Mono campground to the springs themselves, because rather than driving the road in, I hiked in via this route. Thanks so much for this info. I finally made it out to Little Caliente yesterday. Pix with driving directions and hiking info here.by JoelTDahl - California Hot Springs
I'm aware that this is a long-shot, but is anyone aware of any hot springs (rural/rugged, not developed) within a day's drive of zip code 21163? It's just outside Baltimore. Thanks! Joelby JoelTDahl - U.S.A. Hot Springs
Sorry for the double-post. Thought the first attempt had failed.by JoelTDahl - California Hot Springs
I recently discovered Deep Creek Hot Springs, and absolutely love it. I'm now looking for some variety, and came across several recommendations online for Big Caliente and Little Caliente. I have a few questions. 1) For my own driving directional purposes, I'm trying to find Big Caliente and Little Caliente on Googlemaps 1a) Is this Big Caliente? 1b) Is thiby JoelTDahl - California Hot Springs
