Mutau Flat trail is the Johnson Ridge route. I hike that area quite a bit and I do not believe Piedra Blanca will be that bad. The Sespe there will have two crossings in the riverbed. My guess is that if you take off your boots you should be able to wade across. I have never seen it deeper than a couple of feet and maybe 20 or so feet across. Sespe Creek out of old Lions Camp or Piedra Blanca Trailhead. The Thomas Fire bunred near there but I heard pretty much spared the creek area. You can hike several miles back. Once you get a couple of miles from the trailhead nobody cares, they are all soakers heading to Sespe and Willett Hot Spring anyway.by wwbeard - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Actually the odds of getting a single permit for a Whitney day hike on a weekday, especially Monday is pretty good. I do Whitney solo every year and always get my first choice, and I do it on the weekdays. You will definitely want to get to Lone Pine the day before though and hang out at Whitney Portal or Horseshoe Meadows to acclimate to the higher elevation a bit.
