Rick I believe you mentioned InReach on a prior thread. Picked up their newest model. One of the negatives of the previous devices was that they were only one way. That is, you could only send a signal to the satellite and assume that your family or friends received it. With this thing, it's two way communication. InReach relies on the Iridium satellite network, which supposedly is more reliableby mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California

Well not sure I know what I'm talking about most of the time, but yes I did learn about that while training for distance running. If you recall a few years back there was a case where a radio station was having some contest. Not sure if it was for money or tickets but they had a few participants come in and the competition was who could drink the most water, essentially wins. Simple: 1. Update your will. 2. Write letters to loved ones before departure, give them to the kid next door and tell him to go on standby. 3. Get finances in order. 4. Plan and pay for funeral service. Costco has discounts on caskets, you can prepay online. 5. I would be tempted to camp at Crab Flats, although it's a bit of a drive ... 29 miles from Silverwood Lake ... but why not as there are plenty of things to do near Lake Arrowhead in the evenings. It's free during the winter although I'm not sure what the road conditions are to get there and if a permit is still required. The ranger station will know. More importantly, you have toilets and fire riby mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
See ... http://deepcreekhotsprings.net/dchs/forum/read.php?3,24135 Loved the cave. Total darkness. Loved AZ hot springs with the three levels. Would like to spend the night there at some point. We also stopped by Boyscout camp but as you can see the water level is low and so are the sandbags.by mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California

Probably a split second if that. Had many cases of not paying attention to the speed and looking down being surprised. But no, was within the legal threshold quickly. One thing about driving any country road at night are animals that cross. Night vision assist. It came out in my model year. Expect to see it in more mainstream vehicles next. I typically do a lot of research before buying outdoor gear and when I do I keep it for a very long time. Recently I picked up a pair of pants that use the newer eVent technology that goes head to head with the more established Gore-Tex fabrics. In short, very impressed - does a noticeably better job of keeping moisture away during fast paced hiking or running. On a side note, if you are still near Lake Arrowhead over a few days and appreciate good pizza, I would highly recommend LouEddie's Pizza. It's 28561 State Hwy 18, Skyforest. Just trust me :-) We always make a point to stop by that place if hungry. Fire oven baked and some good beer too in a nice old rustic cabin.by mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Rudedog I believe you are correct, the closures are during winter only. I haven't taken the road you mention but sounds like a good alternative to my route below, very suitable for any car and it's quick: 1. Follow the link below using any browser but Internet Explorer - for some reason that one doesn't render the page correctly. 2. You may have a point with 173 although I'm not sure if parts of it may be blocked or not during the winter. 173 snakes to the south of Lake Arrowhead and goes east. Coincidentally though ... if you can wait and assuming you're not going until tomorrow, I'll actually be in your area tonight visiting my friend for dinner. I'll do a GPS map recording and publish it here later in the evening when Iby mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
If you check some of my recent posts I spent two non-consecutive weekends doing off roading in the Lake Arrowhead area. The problem with those roads is that they are not patrolled or kept clear during the winter so you are on your own. If you notice one of my photos is of a large tree that fell making the journey further not possible. On that specific trail, we came across another off roader on tby mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California

QuoteneogeoI've always been a "big dog" person and didn't understand little dogs too well. It came as a surprise for me to learn that the Pomeranian is related most closely to huskies and malamutes, its a sled dog basically that was bred to its smaller size. Unless you are Sherpa. So in 2006 a 24 yr old apparently disgraced his country by standing naked on the peak for 3 minutes. That takes some balls. Then more recently there was a wedding held up there along with other imaginative conquests. Now getting back to the nudist incident, how exactly would they enforce a nudity ban on that mountain ... http://www.southasiabiz.com/2007/09/nepal_governmeby mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California

I believe K2 claims the most lives due to the technical nature. You can actually book a trip to Everest base camp via REI over the last few years. The only thing they need is a physical.by mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Into Thin Air was an interesting read. Apparently Mt Everest due to all the climbing aids left behind over the decades is relatively easy to climb. Aside from the high cost of a permit, I can see this being especially true given that Sherpas carry all of your load, including oxygen bottles. Easy to climb unless the weather turns against you, then you are dead, literally.by mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Highly recommend these if you're into non-fiction adventure. I always bring with me reading/listening material when at the springs or the beach. I was hoping to make to DCHS this weekend but my client conveniently cancelled those plans. I have to be on call and cannot argue with that, someone has to put bread on the table. Anyhow, it's looking to be a great day and hope it's just as nice down at the creek. Took this during my daily morning soak just over an hour ago facing more or less east.by mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Reminded me of these two clips, not sure why. Animals, wild or otherwise, are a part of us. The first clip is a classic, a lion that was adopted as a cub and then let out into the wild reunited with its caregivers years later. The second one is interesting. People forget that we share 98.6% of DNA with these creatures. For lack of a better term, they are at the molecular level, us.by mohave - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California

Thanks appreciate it! Made in to SD a bit late tonight. First needed to hit Plumeria in university heights ... was thinking about their spicy pumpkin curry all afternoon.
