The tides are turning our way, the forest service brought it on themselves! By pushing congress to prolong the demo program it gave us more time to work away at them.by Free our Forests - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
When this program started in 1996 the big selling point to the public was that "80%" of the money generated from the pass would go directly back to the site from which it originated. So how is that going to get accomplished if you have a national pass system? We all know how efficient the federal government is. laughingbear, You ask why the ORVers are getting all of the pie? Well the motorized community have been very active for many years lobbying for there way. Just last year there were stories about the rangers at Yellowstone having to wear gas masks because of all the noxious fumes from the snowmobiles. Least we all forget, the Fee Demonstration program, or " adventure pass" , this slide in on a ryder attached to a appropriations sp bill. There was no public hearing until 1999, 4 years after the fact and even then the public hearings were run in such a manner as to not allow a open forum. I have been doing the mountainbike thing for years, on sanctioned bike trails, unmarked trails, mountainbike forbiddin, and crossing private land. But at the same time I followed the rules Gary pointed out. I've seen trails that mountainbikes have carved out 1ft deep trenches, and I've seen damaged trails from horses and motorbikes, never seen a damaged trail from hikers. Nice article, and thankfully the forest service in all their glory do not even begin to deny what is the backbone of the program. MAKING MONEY, and not for themselves but anyone willing to be a vender. $1 is a pretty good profit for handing someone a pass and asking their zip code. This program is the beginning of the end for what we call free access to our public lands, now private corps. caby Free our Forests - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I like the ideas in the article. How about making compost out of all that mass, much cleaner then burning and think of all the wonderful top soil.by Free our Forests - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
