The older old timers know that for many many years TRASH existed. That is why we they take bags down to the DCHS. If as several folks point out that if the trash does not get hauled away it will close the area down. Personally I do not care if all natural or partly natural folks attend, but campfires are a whole other issue. Several times I have encountered during the summer dry season campers wiby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I have several 900 20 tubes because that is the size my truck uses. Fill them up maybe 4-6 PSI put a circular piece of plywood on one side bound with some heavy string or just lay in the middle if the cold water does not bother you. I floated from lake arrowhead past the springs, but it is quite a bit of work getting on and off as you encounter large boulders that make passing through difficult.by tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
It takes me about 40 minutes from Hwy 18 at the base of the hill to the Bradford Ridge Trail Head or Bradford route. From 40th and Waterman which is Hwy 18 to the trailhead easy to make it in 40 minutes, cause I drive slow. 40th and Waterman to Hwy 189 turn left at Lake Gregory Drive, 100 feet turn right on Hwy 189, 2 miles later turn left on Grass Valley, Turn left on Rhine then right on Grass vby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Or you could just drive to the south end of 173 park and be soaking an hour before daybreak. In 2012 had kind of a stressful day so packed up my gear to arrive at the trailhead shortly after midnight. I arrived at the springs about two AM while needing to leave my leds on the entire time since there was no moon. It was hovering around 30 F when I left, but when I arrived more like 25 F. Normally they are very shy. Seems like they are getting bolder. I was riding my bicycle in the Bradford trailhead area on 173 when I encountered one just after dusk. Think it was a he, but he snarled at me as I was going around a corner and without too much trouble stepped up my pace a bit. That was in fall time 2012. Since then it appeared to be the same male about 4:30 AM at my cabin in Twin Peby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
A nearly perfect weekend indeed. A couple of things would like to add. My trip started Friday afternoon 3-7, 3-8, 3-9-14. Since I have not been to DCHS for a weekend visit in about a year was wondering what it was going to be like. As I was hiking in Friday afternoon using the Bradford Bridge Trail I could not help but notice that the trash was not accumulating along the trail, as was not the casby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Most often I travel through the Bradford trail since I live near Lake Arrowhead. I have never not seen campers on the beach summer or winter. Most often they do not get cited. I wish they would more often. Often this crowd leaves their trash and leaves what is left of their fire on the beach. Especially on a holiday weekend it is common to see seventy five tents on the beach. I have a few favoritby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I do not appreciate any marking on the trail. The reasons as I understand that started this were some IDIOT from LA was worried about getting lost at night so they started marking up the trail. Too bad they could not easily be banned from out door activities. I have traveled this trail and all the others in the middle of the night including the Bradford trail and it is impossible to get lost. Paul thanks for the tips. I have the necessary equipment at my house to do a perfect removal job, however you would need to round up about 5 of your buddies and yourself to get it there. Unfortunately the Graffiti is about midway on the trail as I could imagine it could easily take 6 people all day to get the equipment to the Graffiti site. I will experiment with some of the commercial removers tby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Along the Bradford route there has been some fairly recent Graffiti Tags. I hope this is only an isolated incident. I am experimenting with a small bottle of muriatic acid. I carefully pour a small amount of acid right on the spray paint marks then grab some vegetation to use as a brush and rub it in. A few days latter come along with some water to wash it off. It is not easy carrying acid in youby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Apparently so, he was not there June 26 or June 27. I ran into a fellow who said that he saw Pan less than two weeks ago and had brought food down for him, but could not find him. Early in the morning as I was coming from my campsite so I decided to cruise the beach area for anybody familiar. There was not one campsite setup. In the last several years can not remember an absence of campsites. Itby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Hiker has provided good directions to access the trailhead. If you follow these exactly you will be just fine, as they are a little shorter distance. For first timers I tell people coming from San Bernardino area to go up Hwy 18 until you see the sign for Hwy 173 turn left or North until the road stops and you are there. I live near 173 and always enjoy some company during the hike. Right now theby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Of course you could come in through the Bradford Bridge trail. Come in after dark, leave during the night, arrive at 5 AM, no parking fee, in more than 20 years only a couple of incidents of vandalism that I am aware of, get a bit more exercise, must be prepared to hike alone it is not such a popular trail, and plenty of nice scenery along the way. I was walking out on the Bradford Trail after a very pleasant weekend of June 9 & 10 when I noticed smoke coming from the Bowen Ranch area. Since there was quite a bit of breeze immediately thought that this could be a problem. The DCHS area was covered in smoke in a very short amount of time. Thankfully all the fire agencies arrived quickly and after a few hours the smoke subsided. Saturdayby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Yes, about every other time I go. They last about a week. I have been trying to determine exactly when I get them. Last time I went May 19 & 20 received no bites. A couple of times ago while walking down the Bradford Trail a couple of wasps managed to get inside my backpack and my back. Needless to say it was a precarious situation because the nest was nearby. So consequently did get bit sevby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Hiker I just went down 173 less than an hour ago to check out weather conditions. Wind gusts in excess of 40 MPH, overcast sky, about 55 F. A couple of friends called this morning to say they did not want to go until tomorrow at the earliest. It is very likely that I will not go until Saturday could meet you then. Thanksby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I always prepare for cool nights. You could stay home watching TV when there is NOTHING interesting on or go get some exercise, hang out with some interesting folks, soak in some natural mineral pools, and get a bit of sun. Sounds like a difficult choice to me. Remember there are plenty of spots to hang out at that are not on top of anybody. Never had a bad day yet at DCHS crowded or not.by tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I believe you are referring to Holly Cherries. You can look them up to make sure that the berries you are eating are the same. I eat them by the hand full from the end of July to about the end of October when they turn purple. That is when they are ripe. Do not bite into the seed however cause they contain small amounts of arsenic a toxic substance. Hey Paul P So appreciate your comments, however when I was employed as an engineer and when I was jumping out of helicopters to fight forest fires on federally controlled land my checks came from the USDA. It has always been an interesting dilemma, but Dept. of Forestry comes under USDA. You are not the only person to misunderstand this. Since you are a concerned participant of the hot springs Iby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Hey Hiker am planning to be at the bradford bridge arround 4PM Friday May 25 or would be open to some schedule modifcation. Thanksby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
YES I AM A DIRT BIKE RACER and have seen first hand at what happens when a few people get out of hand. Last year hauled several full size trash bags from the Bradford Trail alone and was disgusted with the kind of trash I saw. And I am sure that I was not the only one taking trash out. Was there May 18 and 19 with more than 40 tents noted near the beach area? Of course plenty of trash to go alonby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Yes if anybody has a more detailed profile or picture that would be good. I plan on a visit this weekend and would be happy to print out a few copies to give out. The place that most enjoy and respect should be free of hidden dagers. Have a great weekend.by tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Hi folks: I am very familar with how to get some people busted. Worked for the USDA as a engineer and still have contact with guards. I am not interested in spending my free time running around dealing with morons who think that mommy is going to follow along behind them to clean up their mess. More than a week ago there were several bags of trash laying around the Bradford trail. After removingby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I agree camping is a no no. There are so many nice places to camp past the springs, can not understand why not just follow the rules. Maybe take some pictures and display them?? I carried a large garbage bag out this AM to the Bradford bridge. Still there is quite a bit more trash to be removed. Maybe a never ending battle. If the trails are covered with trash pretty soon our use of them will beby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
Yes it is Illegal to camp at the springs. In the past two years I have never seen the beach area without campers January and February included. It seems to me that this rule is a joke. Maybe some how these people could be charged a little to carry out some of the trash!by tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I arrived Monday 7-18 from the Bradford route about 6ish and found at least 6 bags along the trail and several bags laying around the springs area. I am planning to go back this AM and retrieve all that can be carried in one trip. It is hard to believe so many carless people who can not carry their soda cans and empty water bottles out. However the weather was perfect, just a few campers, and theby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
I do not think you will have any problems with your camping. Unless you plan on camping right at the hot springs you will have a great time. However in the last 35 years I have noticed people staying (probably camping) right at the beach area all night whenever weather is permitting. Especially when the moon is out. I really appreciate hiking out to the springs from the 173-bridge day or night, iby tjnthesky - Deep Creek Hot Springs, Apple Valley, California
