Augu Caliente is open all year, but the bar and restaurant are open only during April through August. Also, my book says the motel rooms with bar and restaurant service operate during spring and summer months only. There is another fantastic sounding (we have always wanted to make the trip but haven't had the chance yet) hot spring called Guadalupe Canyon Hot Springs. It is Southwest of Mexica

Hi Sam, 1. We made the off-pavement part of our trip in about an hour and a half. But in a sedan and allowing for the road to develope "problems" I would allow two and a half hours. 2. Saline Valley Road is in great shape, except for a stretch (maybe 100 yards long) of soft sand and another bumpy "small boulder field". The only real problem a car would have is on the spur road. Most people don't seem willing to make the trip over the rougher/steeper road. In my opinion, the road to Big Caliente is practically a "freeway" compared to the road to Little Caliente. Did you know that Juncal Campground was closed/removed for ecological reasons? I guess some rare thing was in that area so they took out the campground. That was one of the "landmarks" given for directions in the hot springs book.

Although Forest Service regulations do not prohibit nudity, if someone complains about your nudity you are required to cover up ... no argument allowed. <Bummer> I have almost always visited on the weekends and have never encountered such a non-tolerant crowd to clothing optional use like the one described. Hi Rick, Timeouts are up to you. You could consider making it so you have to approve certain posters' messages. That way you could be certain that those type of posts don't make it through if the poster has proven themselves to be unreliable. At a minimum, if we all ignore his inflamatory attacks he will not have anyone to talk to and attack.

I would say you should expect privacy (about not being photographed without your permission) ... but whether you get that is another thing altogether. Sometimes the people (I use that term loosely) that visit DCHS are not the best characters. It is true that the two signs stating the area is clothing optional use have been removed. There use to be one at each end of the area. One was at the Lower Springs where you arrived and one was at the Palm Springs if you arrived from Steele Pass.

Hi Mike, last time I was there (Presidents Day Weekend) the landing strip was still being used. I haven't heard any rumors about closing it. It's probably just a rumor.

I have something really cool to share with you guys. We went to Remington Hot Spring yesterday and saw a bald eagle soaring over the mountain! Really cool. I am told it has been spotted there a few times. From what I understand, they live in pairs so there's probably another one :0)
