Another really important thing about Japanese hot springs (Onsens) -- You will never be able to soak in most places if you have ANY tattoos. In Japan, tattoos signify criminality and are associated with the Yakuza, which is essentially the Japanese mafia syndicate.
I have purposely held off getting any tattoos for when the day comes and I have the opportunity to go to Japan on a soaking trip.
