GOLETA, CA… Los Padres National Forest’s Ojai Ranger District announced the seasonal opening of two popular roads to public use. The Reyes Peak Road (6N06) and the Nordhoff Ridge/Chief Peak Roads network (5N42.2, 5N08, and 4N15.2) reopened after being closed for the wet weather season.
Reyes Peak Road is a popular route used to access Pine Mountain and Reyes Peak Campgrounds as well as Reyes Peak Trailhead. An Adventure Pass is required for these campgrounds.
The Nordhoff Ridge/Chief Peak Road network is also open for the season. The public must obtain an entry permit from the district office and must have a four-wheel drive vehicle and Adventure Pass. Forest officials are advising the public to use extreme caution due to heavy equipment using these roads through May in support of an ongoing fuels-reduction project. When approaching heavy equipment, get the operator’s attention before proceeding. Motorists can expect short delays when traveling on these roads. Hiker are also reminded to be cognizant of their surroundings and exercise caution.
Personnel at the Ojai District Office can assist with trip planning and provide the latest information about where the equipment is working.
Two additional routes--the Dough Flat Road (6N16 north of Fillmore and Potrero Seco Road (6N03) north of Ojai--remain closed for repairs from winter damage. There is no estimated opening date on these routes.
