Forest Service Seeks Comments on Proposed Perennial Pepperweed Project Near Jordan Hot Springs

Bishop, CA (April 16, 2009)...The Inyo National Forest, Mt. Whitney Ranger District, is preparing an Environmental Assessment for a proposed project to eradicate perennial pepperweed (Lepidium latifolium), a non-native noxious weed, from a small area along the Blackrock-Kern Trail near Jordan Hot Springs in the Golden Trout Wilderness. This project is intended to eradicate the weed from the area by cutting the stems of the plant followed by wick application of imazapyr, an herbicide registered for use in California. No spraying or ground disturbance will be done. In addition to treating the 10 x 15 foot area known to contain perennial pepperweed, the project would also include surveying both the Blackrock-Kern and Wildrose Trails and treating other pepperweed occurrences that are found. How to Comment
The 30-day comment period on this proposed action ends May 18, 2009.This comment period is intended to provide those interested in or affected by this proposal an opportunity to make their concerns known prior to the decision being made by District Ranger Margaret Wood. Only those who provide comments to the proposal by the close of the comment period will be eligible to appeal the decision pursuant to 36 CFR part 215 regulations.
