Lord, this brings back memories. We used to camp at the springs in Saline Valley regularly during the 70's and 80's. That was before the NPS decided to fix things and save us from ourselves. Clothing optional, firearms welcome, everybody friendly. Both our kids started camping there when there before they learned to walk.
The first time we drove in it was a three car caravan, relying on a description of the location from someone who we know had more than a couple of brain cells destroyed. We all still made it, including the VW bug. Maybe if it had been daylight we would have chickened out.
Back then there was one guy who lived there pretty much permanently, venturing into Olancha every month or so for food and supplies. I guess that sort of thing (not to mention the guns and lack of proper attire) is now strictly forbidden by our masters. We're visiting my brother-in-law in Arizona next month, and maybe my wife and I will go back for a few days and break some rules for old time's sake (or auld lang syne, if you prefer, given the season).
