The "itch" generally occurs if you stay in the pools for an extended period of time. If you hop in and hop out all day, you shouldn't get the itch.
Depending on the flow, it may be impossible or difficult to cross at the rocks just upstream from the normal "Beach" crossing, where you will have to wade.
