Re: DCV July meeting minutes part two

Item #4) Scottish Broom Report:

Richard reports on our joint effort with the USFS to eradicate the invasive Scottish Broom plant downstream from the springs. Members agree to inspect the site following the meeting and cut away any new or missed growth. Concern is expressed that the pile of cut plants is drying out and seed pods have opened. We hope that the USFS can remove the plants by helicopter soon.

Item #5) Discussion of possible DCHS closure due to fire danger:

The question is raised as to whether DCV should contact the USFS to verify that DCHS remains open. All present decide that this is not necessary, as the USFS can contact us if a decision is made to close the springs.

Item #6) September Clean-up Day:

We had previously discussed a focus on Family Canyon for our annual fall clean-up event. Recent visits to Family Canyon have revealed that there is no need to focus our efforts in that area. A suggestion is made that we instead focus on a trails cleanup, meeting at Bowen Ranch and cleaning our way to the springs. A cleanup of Bradford Ridge trail is also suggested. One of our guests asks if our group could sign affidavits for students who participate in our cleanup, so that they can list their volunteer work with us on college applications or in resumes. All agree that we can do this.

We agree on a trail cleanup of 3W02 from Bowen Ranch as our focus, and can include other access trails depending on the number of volunteers participating in the event. We also discuss coordinating our efforts with the USFS fall clean-up event. We will contact the USFS about this and coordinate with them if possible.
