WOW! That was some kinda 'shaker' we had yesterday, eh?! I was in Valencia when it hit at 11:15am, and it rolled/swayed very noticably east-west for a good 20 seconds. I held onto a doorway between 2 rooms of the structure I was in and watched in awe as the light fixtures and Xmas ornaments hanging from the ceiling swayed like pendulums for what seems like an eternity.
The quake slowly rocked the entire 2-story building I was in, back and forth -- east and west -- a couple inches (if not more) for the entire time. There were a couple soft 'bumps' or jolts during the shaking, but the motion was generally a rocking back and forth, east & west.
Afterward, I saw no noticible damage to the building, and imagine only a slightly larger magnitude quake would have easily done a lot of damage very quickly. I was not present for the '94 Northridge event, but I hear this one was 2/3rd's the energy of that quake -- a 6.8'er. At it's epicenter near Paso Robles, this one measured 6.5 on the Richter Scale. I can only imagine what it must have felt like there.
I wonder if there were any reports of Sunamis generated by this one?
Rock on, California!
