The local BLM Barstow field office has designated Mike Ahrens as the lead for the WEMO route designation for Juniper Flats. This individual is a former lobbiest for the OHV industry. The conflict of intrest is so apparent it borders on corruption. And guess what he is proposing to be finalized. Mike believes its a good idea to open that hillclimb in a residential neighborhood at the end of Bonita Vista to single track motorcycles. Never mind that the area was closed and rehabed with public funds after the Willow Fire. Never mind that this activity will result in noise and dust pollution in a quiet residential neighborhood. He also thinks its a great idea to open a trail next to the Village that parralels an existing road. Non complient OHV abuse has caused major erosion in this location. His ideas are setting the stage for major conflicts between private property owners and the motorcycle riders he represents. Clearly the BLM had to close J1299 or wind up in court over violations of their own laws. In retaliation, the OHV special intrests on the payroll of the BLM are proceeding to open the area to single track motorcycle use even though the worlds largest open OHV play area is 20 miles away. Looks like its time to take this to the State Director Mike Pool and perhaps even higher than that if we cant get results to the expressed ongoing problems in the area. The BLM is unable to enforce the laws regulating non complient OHV riders in the area. Does encouraging more non complience sound like a solution? I believe an open OHV route should be usable by all, not just a select special group. There is no place for single track routes in an area designated Limited Multiple Use. And.....one must ask, why are the motorcycle intrests being shown favoritism?
