Well.....for starters that illegaly created trail through the Juniper Flats ACEC is an example of why this lawsuit was filed. It is closed by a court order. The designated JF system remains open and provides for free access to the hotsprings as well as connectivity to the USFS network of trails. Clearly, the special OHV intrests tried to railroad this trail into the WEMO route designation by bypassing the public comment period and not showing this route on the maps released by the BLM. This is because it was illegaly created by non complient OHV abuse and runs directly through an ACEC designed to protect an ancient cultural site and adjacent riparian area.
Daniel Patterson is a former BLM biologist who at one time lived in the Apple Valley area near Juniper Flats. The court order temporarily closing close to 400 miles of roads and trails in the Mojave Desert is a "time out" so all parties involved can have some time to look closely at these routes and determine the best direction to procede without causing widespread destruction to our public lands.
The OHV intrests already have several huge areas for their exclusive use for technical off road riding. Should we sacrifice the whole Mojave Desert to just one powerful special intrest group? I think not. Since ample OHV opportunities abound at Johnston Valley and Stoddard Wells Road, Juniper Flats and Arrestra Canyon are not the place for the problems associated with OHV activity. The BLM admits they do not have the resources to manage the lawlessness in the designated OHV areas like Glamis and Rasor. Does it make sence to encourage more?
The free access provided to the Deep Creek area remains open via JF3/JF4-3N59A. This court order has not affected the access into the Juniper Flats area. Things are status quo. Travel on designated open routes . Routes not designated open are closed for now. Anyone who chooses to avoid the Bowen Ranch may continue to do so and enjoy the wild beauty of Deep Creek with free public access for public lands. I fully support this concept.
