NSX - regarding the issue of safety, I wouldn't worry too much. Just use common sense. Make sure you don't take too many valuables along and never leave anything valuable in your tent if you are leaving it unattended to hike to the springs.

At the springs itself, keep an eye on your clothes, food, camera etc. Petty theft is becoming more common but not considered a safety problem. Again, keep an eye on your stuff at the springs.

With normal prudence and caution, you should have an excellent time. I'm sure you will meet some of the friendly locals if you chose to do so.
