In addition, in the BLM's new WEMO plan they are expanding the Juniper Flats ACEC. In an ACEC (Area of Critical Environmental Concern) the designated officer at the BLM would have the power to make all decisions about the area and the public would have no say.
In their 1995 proposed plan (which did not go through) the boundaries of the ACEC were to be expanded and they were proposing that the parking lot for the public to access DCHS was to be centrally located between Tussing Ranch Road and the Forest Service Boundary. Based on this description, we thought they were speaking about having the parking lot at the village. In this scenario, that would be where you would have to hike from to get to the springs.
So, you have the Forest Service and the BLM affecting your ability to access DCHS.
On the Forest Service side, the person told me that it appeared that you would have to hike in from the PCT only.
So get ready to hike 6 miles or more to get to DCHS. This is what I think these agencies have planned. You will be able to see what they have planned very clearly in the months ahead. Believe me, big changes are coming to DCHS.
