My wife, the Munchkins and I took a drive through the San Bernardino Mtns this last Sunday. We went up into Big Bear the back way from the desert on HWY 18. We went across the north side of Big Bear Lake and then continued on past the Big Bear lake dam, Arrowbear, Running Springs, Rim of the World Highschool, past the turn off to Arrowhead lake, finally turned north to go by Lake Gregory and down the hill to go by Silverwood Lake then up through summit valley, across the edge of the Mohave dam and home. This is a round trip through the forest we take every once in a while. On a clear day the views up there are fantastic. The amount of dead trees in the San Bernardino forest, all along the way, is dramatic to say the least. Countless big trees dead. If we don't get some good rains before the rainy season ends the fire danger up there is going to be off the scale. Also about half way through our trip we did a small detour up to Green valley lake which is near the headwaters of Deep Creek. A dirt road 3N16 ends up near Green Valley lake and if you take it a short ways you get some great views out to the desert, toward the direction of DCHS.
